A similar imbalance exists in American politics and is evident in elected offices ranging from local school boards to Congress. During the month in which women's history month is celebrated, we're spotlighting a union member bucking these trends and "trailblazing" within the labor movement, in her industry and her community.
 

Taking Our First Stand to "Keep Us Covered"

Tens of thousands of advocates, caregivers and elected officials earlier this month rallied in cities across the country to stand up to renewed threats to gut Americans' healthcare coverage. The nationwide protests were the first step to oppose attacks by congressional Republicans and the new president on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and vital supports like Medicare and Medicaid. Members of AFT Connecticut-affiliated unions braved the cold on January 15 for a demonstration quickly organized at the State Capitol in Hartford.
 

Where the Front Line Meets the Bottom Line

Hundreds of nurses and health professionals last week gathered in Washington, D.C. to raise their voices on the issues affecting frontline caregivers and their patients. They came to the nation's capitol for AFT's annual Professional Issues Conference (PIC) and Labor Academy for hospital and healthcare workers. More than 30 members of AFT Connecticut-affiliated unions were among the attendees for this year's event, organized under the theme "Where the Front Line Meets the Bottom Line."
 

Yale-New Haven Health System Expansion Threatens to Drive Up Prices

Hartford - A new report released today finds that the expansion of Connecticut's largest hospital system threatens to bring large price spikes to consumers along the state's shoreline. The data reveal that communities impacted by Yale-New Haven Health System's (YNHHS) proposed acquisition of Lawrence + Memorial Health and possible absorption of struggling Milford Hospital could face large price increases as Yale-New Haven's market power grows.

Building Sepsis Awareness

As part of an ongoing public awareness campaign, the Rory Staunton Foundation last month held its second annual forum on Sepsis in Washington, D.C. Our national union's leadership was there to share how we're teaming up with the organization to help prevent unnecessary deaths from the life-threatening medical condition.

Advocates, Leaders Call for Greater Scrutiny of Windham Hospital Service Changes

Hartford - Community leaders and Windham Hospital staff yesterday delivered approximately 3,000 names of residents opposing planned changes for the facility to the state's Office of Health Care Access (OCHA). The legislators, caregivers, and advocates on behalf of a coalition formed to save vital services threatened by Hartford HealthCare (HHC) hand-delivered individual cards to a Department of Public Health (DPH) representative. Each included a name on a petition launched in July by the unions representing Windham Hospital's caregiver workforce urging HHC leadership to drop planned service cuts for the facility.
 

Spotlight: Community Health Center Caregivers

Hundreds of patients, family members and area residents yesterday turned-out for a day of fun and education at the annual Community Health and Wellness Fair in Hartford's North End. The event was hosted by Community Health Services (CHS) in recognition of National Health Center Week (NHCW) and provided an opportunity to spotlight union members delivering the clinic's vital patient care services.
 
 

Caregivers to Offer "Better Choices than Proposed Shutdowns" at Windham Hospital

Willimantic - Nurses, technicians and healthcare workers at Windham Hospital are responding to management's agreement to enter formal talks over planned patient care and hospital staff reductions at the acute care facility. Wednesday's announcement followed three weeks of community engagement efforts led by caregivers and the region's legislative delegation designed to save services slated for closure by the hospital's non-profit owners.
 

Court Decision on Affordable Care Act is Win for Working Families

The U.S. Supreme Court got it right on access to affordable healthcare in its ruling released today in the King v. Burwell case. In a 6 to 3 decision the majority of justices upheld key provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the law enacted in 2010 that expanded coverage to millions of Americans.
