Two Years After Tragedy, Newtown Still Needs Help

Mental health services must be sustained in Newtown so that people can continue the long, hard work of reclaiming their lives, a group of teachers who worked at Sandy Hook Elementary told AFT national, state and local leaders just days before the anniversary of the Dec. 14, 2012, shooting that killed 20 children and six educators at the school.

AFT Helps Launch Memorial to Fallen Educators

The AFT and the Newtown Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 1727, are joining the nonprofit National Teachers Hall of Fame this month to honor and permanently recognize more than 100 U.S. educators who have tragically lost their lives while fulfilling their educational duties. On June 12, the Hall of Fame will dedicate a memorial plaza in their honor on the Emporia State University campus in Emporia, Kansas, a project that the AFT is co-sponsoring along with other major education, philanthropic and business groups.
