Comments on Protests for Justice Following Murder of George Floyd

AFT Connecticut President Jan Hochadel today made the following public remarks in response to demonstrations across the state and country demanding accountability for last week’s police killing in Minneapolis:

Expanding Our Power in Numbers

More than 100 professionals in Connecticut's Judicial Branch last week secured voluntary recognition of their free choice to unite with their colleagues for a voice on the job. Their victory was the fifth over the past year to expand collective bargaining rights to employees in the state's court system. To date, nearly 200 have become new members of our AFT Connecticut-affiliated Judicial Professional Employees (JPE) union, demonstrating the labor movement's capacity to rebound through organizing.

Spotlight: Judicial Branch Probation Officers

In honor of national Pretrial, Probation, and Parole Supervision (PPPS) Week, we're taking time to meet some of our own public employee union members who provide these vital criminal justice services. This month's spotlight comes at a time when Connecticut's court system professionals face tremendous challenges to accomplishing their collective mission; the implementation of an austerity state budget is risking their ability to keep our communities safe.

If Budget Deal Before Legislators Passes Services, Communities, Private Sector Will Suffer

Hartford - Workers who provide services to Connecticut citizens are urging legislators to vote their consciences rather than accept the budget deal which may this week be brought before the General Assembly. They warn that Governor Malloy and the leadership's $820 million in program cuts and employee layoffs would be responsible for substantially damaging the quality of life for millions of residents.

Spotlight: Connecticut State Employees

As the week set aside each year to recognize the nation's public service workforce comes to a close, we're highlighting several state employees concerned about Connecticut's future. Each plays a unique role in contributing to our state's quality of life, but they all share similar worries over proposed budget cuts to safety, health and education services.

State Budget Cuts Threaten Public Safety

Our union leaders have for the past six weeks consistently called on state policymakers to adopt more sensible approaches for closing current and future state budget shortfalls. Since the governor's "state of the state" speech to the General Assembly on February 3rd, we have urged better choices than slashing vital public education, health and safety services.

Spotlight: Judicial Branch Court Support Services Professionals

Each year in mid-July the professionals who provide vital pretrial, probation and parole supervision services are recognized for their efforts to keep our nation's communities safe and stable. Here in Connecticut it's an opportunity to spotlight union members who believe their mission is not just to ensure criminal and juvenile justice but to "act as agents of change."
