Paraprofessionals and school-related personnel (PSRPs) are critical members of the public education workforce whose efforts ensure student success, from Pre-Kindergarten through college. Despite their collective wealth of knowledge, experience and passion, their many diverse and vital contributions are sometimes overlooked. We're spotlighting a union member being honored for her work on the same day that PSRPs are given overdue credit for the critical difference they make in their students' lives.
 

Spotlight: Ensuring Special Education Students' Success

Paraeducators are among the most important members of a school's team, particularly when it comes to providing a quality learning experience for children with special needs. Teachers and administrators have become increasingly reliant on their support as students with disabilities and English Language Learners (ELLs) have been "mainstreamed" into the classroom. During the week in which the annual recognition of paraprofessionals is celebrated in Connecticut, we're spotlighting a union member who has dedicated her career to helping students.

The Senate's Judiciary Committee on Monday will convene confirmation hearings in Washington, D.C. for President Trump's nominee to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS). The impact of the eventual vote on Judge Neil Gorsuch's bid cannot be overstated. That's why union members are joining with consumer, social justice and women's rights advocates to ensure federal lawmakers fulfill their constitutional "advice and consent" duties.

Spotlight: Supporting Students' Educational Opportunities

Paraprofessionals and school-related personnel (PSRPs) represent approximately 40 percent of the staff in our nation's public schools and play a vital role in reclaiming the promise of a great education. We're spotlighting union members who are "the engines keeping public schools running" at the same time that they are recognized nationally for the positive impact they have on students' lives.
 

Spotlight: Classroom Paraprofessionals

Leaders from several AFT Connecticut-affiliated unions representing hard-working school paraeducators in districts across the state this weekend are joining with their colleagues from throughout the country. They gathered in Las Vegas for our national union's professional issues conference for paras and school-related personnel (PSRP), which this year coincides with national Paraprofessional Appreciation Day on April 2.
 

Top Honors for a Deserving Paraprofessional

Veteran educator Denise Seel on Monday was named Connecticut's 2016 Anne Marie Murphy Paraeducator of the Year at the school in Hartford where she has worked for 13 years. Attending the event were the lieutenant governor, the commissioner of the State Department of Education (SDE), district officials and Seel's colleagues from both AFT Connecticut-affiliated local unions representing school employees.
