"Rewarding to Win on Issues that Matter" to Our Members

Despite the challenges posed by a deadly second wave of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) infections, union members over the past three months made significant progress at the negotiating table. We’re highlighting a contract victory for our latest collective bargaining report resulting from workplace activism in spite of the limitations imposed by the pandemic. The win reinforces how engaging the membership around priority issues yields real dividends.

Demanding a Voice in Reopening Safely

Members of AFT Connecticut-affiliated local unions have for the past four weeks taken center stage in the debate over fall "back to school" plans. Teachers and education personnel have repeatedly called for prioritizing students and staff health in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) pandemic. Efforts culminated this week in public actions organized with labor allies demanding state officials put safety first.

Showing Members "How We are Here to Help"

In the closing months of 2018, bargaining teams representing five AFT Connecticut-affiliated local unions won new contracts, including several with notable gains for new members. Others made steady progress for veteran employees, while some struck the often challenging balance of achieving both. The start of a new year is a good time to highlight two demonstrating the value of collective bargaining for all members of our "labor family."

Helping Fellow Members "Improve their Practice"

As a democratic labor organization, AFT Connecticut adheres to the principle of local unions governed "of members, by members and for members." These values are evident in our professional development (PD) program, which relies less on big name experts and more on trusted colleagues to teach valuable career advancement and labor leadership skills. It is in this cooperative atmosphere that members can share their passion and expertise with each other.

Spotlight: "Telling a Story" to Teach History

The writer and philosopher George Santayana more than a century ago said that "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." His words have been frequently echoed ever since, and provide a foundational element of both public education in the U.S. and international policy around the world. During the month in which Human Rights Day is observed, we're spotlighting a teacher who taps into his students' artistic creativity and talents to help them prevent history from repeating.
