And she calls 1.5 million teachers, paraprofessionals and schools personnel, higher education faculty and staff, public employees, nurses and healthcare professionals to stand up and declare "I Am My Union:"

Rocky Hill - New officers chosen to serve AFT Connecticut through 2017 have taken office and recommitted the statewide labor organization's ongoing community engagement, worker organizing, collective bargaining and political activism efforts. Delegates representing affiliated local unions in May elected the federation's president, executive vice president, first vice president, secretary/treasurer and 22 vice presidents for two-year terms effective today.
 

Nurses and Health Professionals Back Mayor Finizio's Leadership for New London

New London - Citing his collective commitment to working families' issues, members of the 29,000-strong AFT Connecticut are supporting Daryl Justin Finizio's re-election as mayor of the city of New London. The labor federation's local unions representing Lawrence + Memorial (L+M) Hospital's nurses, technicians and healthcare workers and William W. Backus Hospital's registered nurses are also formally backing Mayor Finizio.
 

Congress Must Support Paras' Growth and Development

AFT is urging federal lawmakers to preserve in a reauthorized Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) those provisions that help paraprofessionals get the knowledge and training they need to continue to make outstanding classroom contributions. At risk is the ability of local districts to recruit and retain these indispensable members of the school team who make student success possible.

Teachers Back Gomes

Bridgeport - Connecticut teachers have endorsed Edwin Gomes for the special election in the 23rd Senate District, which includes portions of Bridgeport and Stratford. Gomes, a former state Senator, received the endorsement from both of the state’s teachers’ organizations, the Connecticut Education Association (CEA) and American Federation of Teachers Connecticut (AFT Connecticut).
 

Nurses Weigh In on the 40-Hour Workweek Debate

Registered nurses (RNs) Irene Jagde and Janice Stauffer, members of the Danbury Nurses Union, Unit 47, last week traveled to Washington, D.C., to speak out against a proposal to redefine who qualifies as a full-time worker under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) held a hearing on the matter titled "Examining Job-Based Health Insurance and Defining Full-Time Work."

Tech Professionals at Danbury, New Milford Hospitals Vote for Voice to Improve Care

Danbury - Surgical and radiology technologists, licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and respiratory clinicians at Danbury and New Milford Hospitals on Friday voted "Union Yes" in a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)-supervised election. The caregivers cast their ballots 11 weeks after achieving majority status and seeking voluntary recognition of their union from the Western Connecticut Health Network (WCHN). The network refused, leading to lengthy and costly delays, a federal labor board hearing in October and Friday's secret ballot vote for the new bargaining unit of approximately 260 employees.

But right-wing politicians are standing in the way of his confirmation, leaving all of us without a "top doc" for the nation. Whether it’s the unprecedented spread of Ebola or a bad flu epidemic, healthcare workers are on the frontlines of public health scares and crises every day. There’s no place for politics when people are putting their lives on the line.

AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer, AFT President to Rally Union Members, "GOTV" for Endorsed Candidates

Rocky Hill -- AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer Liz Shuler and AFT President Randi Weingarten, accompanied by Governor Dannel Malloy and U.S. Representative Elizabeth Esty, on Sunday, October 26th will join union members at a Labor-to-Labor walk in Farmington to kick off "Get Out the Vote" (GOTV) efforts in support of the governor's race and other local elections.
 

Question 1 - Vote YES for a Stronger Democracy

On November 4, there will be a State Constitutional Amendment (Question 1) on the Connecticut ballot. The purpose is to improve voter turnout by removing barriers that often discourage and deter eligible voters from exercising their most fundamental democratic right. More than 30 states already allow "early voting," but ours does not. That's why AFT Connecticut is urging a YES vote on Question 1 to make it possible here, too.
