Turning Up the Heat to "Reclaim the Planet"

The sense of doom that motivated an estimated 310,000 people to converge on the Upper West Side of New York City on Sunday for the People's Climate March did not dampen their hope and optimism for a vision of a green future. Swelling the crowd were hundreds of AFT members and thousands of trade unionists from the more than 70 labor organizations that were co-sponsors of the day's events.

AFT President Randi Weingarten continued her national back-to-school visits last week with a two-state New England swing that showcased the type of trust, accountability and collaboration that has sparked concrete improvement in local public schools. After visiting two Massachusetts communities, she toured schools in Meriden and New Haven, where she was accompanied for much of the day by Gov. Dannel Malloy.

Linda Orange Backed by Healthcare, Education, Public Employees as "Champion for Working Families"

Rocky Hill - Citing her background in healthcare and strong legislative and public service records, members of the 29,000-strong AFT Connecticut are supporting the re-election of State Rep. Linda A. Orange. The labor federation's local union representing registered nurses (RNs) at William W. Backus Hospital is also formally backing the 48th House District incumbent's candidacy in the August 12th Primary Election.

Rocky Hill - Citing her record of advocacy in the General Assembly, members of the 29,000-strong AFT Connecticut are supporting State Rep. Elizabeth "Betsy" Ritter's candidacy for the 20th state Senate District. The labor federation's local unions representing Lawrence + Memorial (L+M) Hospital's nurses, technicians and healthcare workers and William W. Backus Hospital's registered nurses are also formally backing Rep. Ritter. 
 

Donna Brazile Announces "Democrats for Public Education" at AFT Convention

Los Angeles - Addressing more than 3,500 members of the AFT at its national convention, Democratic strategist Donna Brazile announced the formation of a new group that she will co-chair called Democrats for Public Education, which will focus on uniting the vast majority of Democrats, who believe in the promise of public education.

The labor federation's local union affiliate representing Hartford Public Schools' teachers and support personnel is also formally backing the Second Senate District incumbent's candidacy in the August 12th Primary Election.

Rocky Hill - Elected leaders of the 29,000-strong AFT Connecticut last night voted overwhelmingly to support incumbent statewide elected officials with strong records of respecting workers' rights on the job. The labor federation's executive committee voted in favor of formal endorsements of candidates for congress and state constitutional offices that will appear on the November 4 General Election ballot.
