The Labor Day holiday weekend traditionally marks the beginning of the "political season" when most voters begin to pay attention to the choices in early November's General Election. Dozens of activists in AFT Connecticut-affiliated unions have been engaged in the process as far back as last winter. Their efforts have built a foundation that is providing momentum for the final phase of our member-powered political program for 2018, which is now underway.
 

Public Employees Converge on the Capitol to Defend Rights

With chants of "We Will Fight!," a crowd of nearly 1,500 on Friday took over Minuteman Park in Hartford to denounce lawmakers' proposals to silence the voices of working people. The rally was organized by members of unions representing Connecticut's public sector workforce as part of a series of actions throughout the day at the State Capitol complex. They came to resist 77 individual bills that, if passed into law, would roll-back collective bargaining rights and undermine state and municipal public service employees' pay and benefits.
 

Where the Front Line Meets the Bottom Line

Hundreds of nurses and health professionals last week gathered in Washington, D.C. to raise their voices on the issues affecting frontline caregivers and their patients. They came to the nation's capitol for AFT's annual Professional Issues Conference (PIC) and Labor Academy for hospital and healthcare workers. More than 30 members of AFT Connecticut-affiliated unions were among the attendees for this year's event, organized under the theme "Where the Front Line Meets the Bottom Line."
 

L+M Hospital Caregivers Approve New Collective Bargaining Agreement

New London – Members of the three AFT-Connecticut affiliated unions who represent nearly 1,700 employees at Lawrence + Memorial (L+M) Hospital yesterday overwhelmingly ratified a new three-year contract. Hospital and AFT leadership announced a tentative agreement on Monday. Specifics of the agreement, which run through June 30, 2019, were not announced. 
 

Yale-New Haven Health System Expansion Threatens to Drive Up Prices

Hartford - A new report released today finds that the expansion of Connecticut's largest hospital system threatens to bring large price spikes to consumers along the state's shoreline. The data reveal that communities impacted by Yale-New Haven Health System's (YNHHS) proposed acquisition of Lawrence + Memorial Health and possible absorption of struggling Milford Hospital could face large price increases as Yale-New Haven's market power grows.

Nurses and Health Professionals Back Mayor Finizio's Leadership for New London

New London - Citing his collective commitment to working families' issues, members of the 29,000-strong AFT Connecticut are supporting Daryl Justin Finizio's re-election as mayor of the city of New London. The labor federation's local unions representing Lawrence + Memorial (L+M) Hospital's nurses, technicians and healthcare workers and William W. Backus Hospital's registered nurses are also formally backing Mayor Finizio.
 

L+M Corp. Indicted for "Unfair Labor Practices" Against Outpatient Facility Employees

New London - Caregivers at Lawrence + Memorial (L+M) Hospital are responding to a December 23 National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) decision regarding illegal tactics used last fall to block colleagues from joining their union. The board's regional director on December 23 issued a formal complaint after reviewing evidence of Lawrence + Memorial Medical Group (LMMG) supervisors suppressing New London outpatient facility employees' organizing efforts. Proceedings are scheduled to begin March 10 at the NLRB’s Hartford regional office for an administrative law judge to hear testimony of the unfair labor practice charges against LMMG.

Rocky Hill - Citing her record of advocacy in the General Assembly, members of the 29,000-strong AFT Connecticut are supporting State Rep. Elizabeth "Betsy" Ritter's candidacy for the 20th state Senate District. The labor federation's local unions representing Lawrence + Memorial (L+M) Hospital's nurses, technicians and healthcare workers and William W. Backus Hospital's registered nurses are also formally backing Rep. Ritter. 
 

AFT Convention Recognizes L+M Hospital Union Leaders, Addresses Staffing Levels, Patient Care

Los Angeles - The AFT at its national convention in Los Angeles bestowed the Everyday Hero healthcare award to the leaders of three AFT Connecticut unions at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London. Delegates representing the second-largest nurse union in the nation also approved resolutions calling for safe staffing levels and efforts to reshape the healthcare industry to put patients before corporate profits.
